It doesn't take too much to make your camping trip much more enjoyable - but - purchasing high-end camping gear can make your wallet become thin! We at Southeast Overland strive to locate products that will make your time in the out of doors more enjoyable while not breaking the bank.
One thing that we believe in is to fully prepare for each outing and to carefully pack and store your gear. We utilize both hard plastic and stackable storage containers that we lash down in our rear cargo area, along with soft storage bags for gear such as recovery straps, some tools, and other miscellaneous pieces. Everything though is lashed down. The last thing you want is for a wrench or other heavy object to come flying forward and damage your vehicle or possibly hurt an occupant.
We pack our hard plastic containers with similar gear. We have a kitchen / cooking container, and a around camp container. When meal time comes we can grab the kitchen / cooking container and have everything we need to cook and clean up, or if it is time to relax, take a shower, or mend a pair of ripped pants we can pull out the 'around camp' container and have everything that we need. Similarly, our sleeping gear including tents, sleeping pads or air mattress, sleeping bags and pillows are all stowed together for quick set-up and stowage. (Yes - we do bring full sized pillows. We have found that they make for a much more comfortable night!)
Our very heavy gear such as spare parts and tools are typically stored 'under ground' in our 'cabinet-style' storage areas so there is very little chance that these could come loose. 'The Boys' (our dogs) are semi-stowed. Jack travels in a dog crate but Cruiser's dog crate doesn't fit in the back of the FJC so he has to travel in the back seat behind the driver. He usually lays down and is quiet, especially on longer stretches of road, but we are looking for a more secure way to travel with Cruiser.
We will soon provide more information below on the various products we have found to be indispensable in our travels and camping.
